LOST

“I know where I want to go, but don’t know how to get there.” This person drives around hoping to stumble across their desired destination. Spiritually, they’ll wander in and out of various religious groups and Bible studies. They still feel lost and don’t have the “anchor of the soul” found in Christ (He 6:19).

“I know where I want to go, but I don’t need a map or anyone to show me.” This person will drive the wrong way forever before admitting a wrong turn or before stopping to ask for directions. Maybe they’ll find it, but probably not. Without God’s guiding word, all will be lost (Ps 119:105; Jn 17:17; Ja 1:18).

“I know where I wanted to go, but when I get there it isn’t where I intended to go.” This person has false concepts of their destination – they’re sure that where they are headed will be what they expect – fulfilling, fun, etc., not matter what others may say or advise. Spiritually, this person insists that worldly pleasures are worthwhile, fulfilling, and lasting – despite what God and life clearly demonstrate (1 Jn 2:16-17).

“I don’t know where I’m going, but I’m having a good time!” This is the person who just wants to go, see the world, with no ties or schedules or rules. This may sometimes work in the physical world, but in spiritual matters, not planning for the future (eternity) and ignoring God’s law will spell disaster at the judgement (Mt 7:23).

“I don’t know where I want to go, but I have several brochures.” This person isn’t sure where they want to go, but is considering all the offers, attractions, and amenities. Spiritually, the world appeals primarily to our flesh, but God appeals primarily to our spirit (Mt 6:33). The person who chooses spiritual things (church, teachings, moral standards, etc.) based on physical offers will miss the spiritual blessings in Christ.

“I’m going where everyone else is going.” This person follows the crowd. They suppose that at least they’ll have a good time and lots of friends. God warns that the majority will not choose to do right. He warns us that judging what is good or right based on others shows lack of faith in Him and in His word, and will end in death (Je 10:23; Pr 14:12).

“I’m going this way because it is easy.” This person takes shortcuts, doesn’t always obey the law, and is only interested in making things easier for themselves. Serving God is not about self. It isn’t about what “I” want or like, it isn’t about what is easy for “me.” Jesus said that the wide, easy path leads to destruction and many will go that way (Mt 7:13). We need to poll God, not self and others, when deciding what is the right way to live.

Many people are lost and don’t even know it. The good news is that, “…the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Lk 19:10). He will find you if you look for Him and follow Him.    dd
