Oh Be Careful...
Some of us grew up with the kid’s song:
Oh, be careful, little eyes, what you see,
Oh, be careful, little eyes, what you see.
There’s a Father up above looking down in tender love,
Oh, be careful, little eyes, what you see.
This is vital spiritual advice for kids AND adults. “The lamp of the body is the eye” (Matt 6:22-23). What we see has a deep impact on us!
The Psalmist wrote:
“I will set nothing wicked before my eyes” (Psa 101:3)
“Turn my eyes from looking at worthing things…” (Psa 119:37)
We need to train our kids to not look at wicked and worthless things by monitoring and choosing what they look at on their devices, in movies and TV shows, in short form content. But we also need to set before their eyes good and worthwhile things so they have that exposure and learn what content to choose. Many times we have no idea what our kids are seeing and watching. That’s not right. That’s not being careful, little eyes, what you see!
But this lesson isn’t just for kids. Adults are children of God too!
Job made an eye commitment: ““I have made a covenant with my eyes; Why then should I look upon a young woman?” (Job 31:1). Jesus warned that lust is adultery in the heart (Matt 5:28) and taught radical changes to avoid sinning with our eyes (Matt 5:29). The writer of Proverbs advised, “Let your eyes look straight ahead, and your eyelids look right before you. Ponder the path of your feet…” (Pro 4:25-27). And it’s not just about avoiding seeing bad things, but also intentionally looking at what is good: “Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith” (Heb 12:2). So, not only does this affect what media and entertainment we choose to watch, but it also drives us to choose and create opportunities to fill our eyes with spiritually good content.
Our Father is “up above looking down in tender love” so “be careful, little eyes, what you see.” dd
